Langara College Academic Planner
Empowering students to take charge

HIGHLIGHT
By centralizing advising resources and simplifying navigation, “Plan with Confidence” empowers students to take control of their academic planning with clarity, ease, and timely support—eliminating confusion and making pathways to graduation more accessible.

ABOUT PROJECT
Langara College recognized that many students were struggling to stay on track with their academic journeys—often feeling overwhelmed by course planning, unclear program requirements, and disjointed advising resources. To address this, the college launched “Plan with Confidence”, a new initiative aiming to make academic advising more accessible, proactive, and student-centered. I was engaged as part of Langara’s internal design team to support the early-stage UX efforts, including foundational research, information architecture, user flows, and content strategy.
MY ROLE
While I didn’t lead the visual design implementation, I was closely involved in shaping the strategic foundation of the user experience. I collaborated directly with the Quality Assurance (QA) Academic department, academic advisors, and students to ensure the solution would meet real needs.
- Conducted discovery sessions with students and advisors to understand common pain points and expectations when accessing advising support.
- Restructured how content and tools were organized across the advising platform to reduce cognitive load and promote easy navigation.
- Mapped out the core journeys for key use cases—such as exploring academic pathways, and tracking course progress.
- Helped define clear, student-friendly language and tone for the website—aimed at demystifying academic terminology and processes.
- Worked closely with the internal development and design team to ensure alignment on user needs, technical feasibility, and institutional goals.
CHALLENGE
Design a digital experience that empowers students to
confidently plan their academic path by improving clarity,
usability, and access to support.
Students were facing several challenges:
- Difficulty navigating program requirements and prerequisites
- Limited visibility into academic pathways and timelines
- Confusion around which advising services to access and when
- Fragmented digital experience across advising resources
SOLUTION
The platform centralizes academic advising resources, streamlines student navigation, and simplifies appointment booking and academic planning—built on a user-centered foundation established in the project’s early phases.

MY TAKEAWAYS
Collaboration is key
This project underscored the importance of collaborative UX strategy in institutional settings, where aligning multiple departments is key. It also highlighted how thoughtful information architecture and language design can meaningfully reduce confusion and increase student confidence. Even without owning the final UI, I believe that UX designers can have a lasting impact by setting a solid foundation that ensures the right problems are being solved for the right people.
